Background of the study

Adult literacy programs have emerged as transformative tools not only for improving individual competencies but also for fostering broader societal benefits such as peacebuilding. In Maiduguri, Borno State, where communities have experienced prolonged conflict and social fragmentation, adult literacy initiatives serve as a foundation for rebuilding trust and promoting dialogue. These programs are designed to empower individuals by enhancing their reading and writing skills, thereby enabling them to access information, engage in meaningful discussions, and participate in community decision-making processes (Bello, 2023). Improved literacy facilitates the dissemination of peace-promoting messages and provides a platform for conflict resolution by fostering understanding and empathy among community members. Literacy education in Maiduguri is strategically linked with civic education, emphasizing the role of informed citizenship in maintaining social harmony (Haruna, 2024). The curriculum often includes modules on conflict resolution, human rights, and community development, which are intended to nurture critical thinking and encourage collaborative problem-solving. Moreover, adult literacy programs provide a space for marginalized groups to voice their concerns and contribute to peacebuilding initiatives, thereby bridging societal divides. However, challenges such as limited funding, infrastructural deficits, and socio-cultural barriers continue to hinder the full realization of these benefits. Despite these obstacles, recent studies highlight that literacy is a key driver of social change, capable of transforming conflict-prone environments into cohesive, resilient communities (Adamu, 2025). The integration of literacy with peace education has the potential to mitigate the long-term impacts of conflict by equipping individuals with the tools needed to foster reconciliation and sustainable development. This study aims to examine the effectiveness of adult literacy programs in promoting peacebuilding in Maiduguri, exploring how educational interventions can contribute to social stability and community empowerment. By providing evidence-based insights, the research seeks to inform policy decisions and enhance program design, ultimately supporting efforts to rebuild and sustain peaceful communities.

Statement of the problem

Despite the recognized role of adult literacy programs in promoting peace and social cohesion, communities in Maiduguri continue to experience challenges that impede these outcomes. Prolonged conflict and social fragmentation have left deep-seated mistrust and limited communication channels among various community groups. While literacy programs are intended to bridge these divides, their effectiveness is often compromised by factors such as inadequate funding, limited reach, and cultural resistance. Many adults who participate in literacy classes remain isolated from broader peacebuilding initiatives, and the curriculum may not fully address the complex dynamics of conflict resolution required in a post-conflict environment (Bello, 2023). Additionally, infrastructural challenges, including insufficient learning centers and a shortage of trained educators, further limit the impact of these programs. The persistence of low literacy levels in some segments of the population exacerbates the problem, making it difficult for affected individuals to engage in effective dialogue and community rebuilding efforts. Moreover, there is a lack of systematic evaluation regarding how literacy translates into tangible peacebuilding outcomes. Without clear metrics and sustained support, it is challenging to determine whether these programs are meeting their intended goals. This disconnect between program objectives and real-world outcomes necessitates a comprehensive examination of the mechanisms through which adult literacy can contribute to peacebuilding. Addressing this gap is essential for formulating strategies that not only improve literacy rates but also harness the transformative potential of education to foster reconciliation and social unity (Haruna, 2024; Adamu, 2025).

Objectives of the study

• To assess the impact of adult literacy programs on peacebuilding efforts in Maiduguri.

• To identify the barriers that hinder the effective integration of literacy and peace education.

• To propose strategies for enhancing the role of literacy programs in promoting social cohesion.

Research questions

• How do adult literacy programs influence peacebuilding among communities in Maiduguri?

• What challenges impede the integration of literacy education with peace initiatives?

• What strategies can improve the effectiveness of literacy programs in fostering social cohesion?

Research Hypotheses

• H1: Enhanced literacy levels are positively associated with increased community engagement in peacebuilding activities.

• H2: Inadequate program resources and cultural barriers negatively affect the peacebuilding impact of literacy initiatives.

• H3: Integrating targeted peace education modules within literacy programs will improve social cohesion.

Significance of the study

This study is significant because it explores the potential of adult literacy programs to promote peacebuilding in Maiduguri. By linking literacy with conflict resolution and community development, the research provides vital insights for policymakers and practitioners working in post-conflict settings. The findings will guide the enhancement of literacy curricula to better serve peacebuilding objectives, ultimately contributing to more resilient and unified communities (Bello, 2023; Adamu, 2025).
